When we realized that county officials wanted to push this through without much public awareness, we organized People’s Forum to let residents hear from scientists and experts about the costs and benefits of hyperscale data centers and the Artificial Intelligence they power. FCDX brought together a panel of experts that spoke to the impacts of Project Jupiter, countering the industry propaganda heavily marketed to us. We know our community wants more and better information, because our People’s Forum was so well-attended there was standing room only!

A lack of transparency, changing procedure, and constant demands for the public to respect decorum put commissioners’ behavior in the limelight. During public input they are often disengaged, visibly annoyed, and break their own rules to whisper to each other while the public speaks. As local artist and activist Era Snow put it, the whole thing began to feel like “performing to an unamused royal court.” At the July 14th BOCC meeting we decided, if they aren’t going to take us seriously… we may as well enjoy our role as ‘court jesters.’
River Protest
When our representatives at the federal level arrived to open up the data center discussion, we crashed their photo-op with a clear message that data centers are not welcome in our desert! Members of the Stop Project Jupiter campaign came together to march down the Rio Grand with banners decrying the effects of data centers on our land. Our Senators were well aware that this day would be one of a few where our life-giving river would hold any water. If they truly respected this resource, they would Stop Project Jupiter!
